A case of the itchies.

Did that title draw you in? Heh. It’s not as bad as it sounds. We recently noticed Harper had a skin irritation that started on her inside elbow, then showed up on her ribs and then behind her leg. She calls them her itchies.

We did a few things for her thinking maybe it was prickly heat but by the time it showed up on her leg we knew we needed to hit up the doctor.

Turns out it’s a pretty common skin irritation. We immediately felt like it was an intolerance to a gluten. All the signs pointed that way. So we took the script for cream home with us and I started making some small but important changes.

This kid LOVES her some waffles and being as pregnant as I am… I happily oblige a few mornings a week to pop two waffles in the toaster and call it breakfast. In my defense- I cut up some fruit to go with it #balance.

Not to mention macaroni and cheese, peanut butter + jelly sandwiches, gold fish snacks, and on and on. Can you blame her? Me neither. Kid has her priorities in order. Too bad her little body says otherwise.

(I’ll share a future post about how we switched things up around here but for today I have something just as important for you.)

SO what’s a crunchy momma to do? I went searching for a DIY lotion that I could use- in conjunction with the recommendations set forth by our MD. It smells so good and has been really helpful in keeping things under control. Not to mention I feel good about putting it all over her because I know EXACTLY what’s in it.

Harper’s Lotion

1/4 cup of Coconut Oil (Target!)

*We choose to use Young Living’s Essential Oils in our home because of their transparency about quality. You do you, but please don’t take my suggestions for recipes and apply them to any brand of essential oil. They are NOT all created equal. I melted the shea butter and coconut oil over low heat (I did make-shift a double burner to be sure I didn’t burn anything- just some water in the pot and I put a glass bowl over it. Make sure the water is not touching the bowl once its rested. You’re using the steam to do the melting).

Once it was completely melted I took it off the heat and let it cool a bit. Then I carefully put the bowl in the fridge to cool completely (Put it on a trivet- it may still be hot).

Once cooled I added it to the mixer and whipped it until it was fluffy, added the oils and mixed until everything was well combined.

It made 3 small jars of cream. I’ll keep two in the fridge and leave one in her room.

So I know I gave specific measurements of the Shea Butter and coconut oil but if I’m being honest. I never measure anything. I prefer to wing it. So you do you and I hope this is helpful!
