DIY “Antique Brass” Nutcrackers

Christmas decor is such a tricky place to invest money- these are things that we only bring out for a few weeks each year but it feels like such a must have. Maybe it’s not for you but I love to add a new decor piece to our collection each year (and purge anything I’m not in love with anymore). I specifically budget to be able to do so, but when I saw the prices on wooden nutcrackers I knew they cost far and above what we had saved and frankly more than I was willing to pay.

So I went to the first place I always go, Pinterest. I saw a few really good DIY tutorials but I knew I could make it even easier (and cheaper, honestly).

I started by spray painting my nutcrackers black. I did this in a few coats to be sure they were completely covered by every angle. This part matters. You don’t want any wood showing through. You could give them a quick sand on any of the rough parts first but I didn’t because I am impatient.

Let that dry completely and then go for a really light coat of metallic spray paint. You can always add more so it’s better to start off light.

Let each coat of spray paint dry completely, reapplying until you’re happy with the results. When you are, you’re done!

You could choose to cover them with a clear coat or a shellac spray to seal + protect them. I didn’t and I probably won’t because I don’t want them to have a glossy finish. Maybe they make a matte finish clear coat? IDK. I’m really happy with the results!

These were such a fun and easy Christmas decor DIY that you could easily recreate in these last few days before Christmas! Add them to a gift, make + save them for next year or just hold onto the supplies and see what’s trending for Christmas decor next year! Nutcrackers are so classic, you really can’t go wrong!
