Harper’s First Day of Kindergarten

Our Harper girl gave us another first today! Kindergarten here we come!

A few years ago our lives looked so different and I remember having so many firsts without Joe around. He was working 60+ hours a week without vacation days, sick days, or overtime pay. We KNEW it was not the way forward. We knew there was a massive shift coming in our lives to be able to have more time together.

When he closed his business and took a position at his current company in June 2018 we were SO excited about the future, the things it would allow us to do. The time together and the security.

Little did we know the ripple effect that this change would bring and the season we were about to enter. This is the beginning of a story for another day but my point is that he was there today. He got to pull up to school drop-off with me and we’ll stand at that dismissal door together. I could cry typing this because I worried for years about how our future would look if we kept going as we were.

This darling girl was so nervous/excited to go to school. She wants to learn about outer space and read new books, play outside and make new friends! We had orientation at her school last week and it was the best thing for her. They whisked the kids off to meet their teacher and left the parents with tears in their eyes wondering how they grew up so fast. Oh, just me? Okay, cool.

They toured their new classroom, found their cubbies, read a book + took a ride on the school bus! I’ll be taking Harper to school each day, much to her dismay, but I’m home and obsessed with her available and oddly looking forward to being thrust into a serious routine. I’m planning to really hit the ground running with my blog and hanging out here more often! But it was the best first introduction to school for them and I’m sure she wasn’t the only kid sitting at the dinner table that night telling their parents how they weren’t nervous anymore.

So, here we are. 5 years old and off to school. Time is a thief and babies don’t keep and all of that. I’ll be crying into my Chai all morning while doing a little shimmy because she’s off to school!!

Funny story- The day after orientation we were flipping the calendar to September and we started to talk about the holidays coming up over the next few months. Harper began to ask of she had school on those days and when we got the the first day of Autumn I could see her little eye welling up with tears…. reality has hit. She has to go to school everyday including… her birthday! OH MY HEART. The meltdown. Poor girl. I’m sure she’s going to fall right into the routine and love it so much but talk about a shock. Me too, girl. Me too.

xx, Em
